Content Analyses of User Comments in Journalism: A Systematic Literature Review Spanning Communication Studies and Computer Science

Different disciplines have studied the content of online user comments in various contexts, using manual qualitative/quantitative or (semi-)automated approaches. The broad spectrum and disciplinary divides make it difficult to grasp an overview those aspects which already been examined, e.g. identify findings related one’s own research, recommendable methodological approaches, under-researched topics. We introduce a systematic literature review concerning analyses journalistic context. Our covers 192 papers identified through search focussing on communication studies computer science. find that research predominantly concentrates comment sections Anglo-American newspaper brands like hate speech, general incivility, users’ opinions specific issues, while disregarding media from other parts world, social media, propaganda, constructive comments. From our results we derive agenda addresses gaps also highlights potentials for automating as well cooperation across disciplines.
